Introduction

When it comes to essential oils, or EOs as they are also known, Peppermint is one that constantly pops up in the conversation. This particular natural essence is one of the most prominent varieties of EO and for good reason.

The benefits and uses associated with pure peppermint oil are so wide ranging and numerous that there aren’t many people who would not avail of using this EO. Actually, there’s no-one!! 😊

This article will delve into the top 10 uses and will leave you in doubt of the positive impacts that this natural substance can have. I’ve also added in an extra use that cropped up fairly regularly while I was researching this topic.

1 – Encourages Hair Growth

Using peppermint oil for hair growth is something that has been around for countless years. How someone actually came upon this breakthrough is anyone’s guess, but the bottom line is that it works brilliantly!

Though, before we get ahead of ourselves, it’s important to point out that this EO won’t give a bald person an Afro over night! We must be realistic. However, this EO can indeed cause hair follicles to grow with regards to depth as well as thickness.

There have been many tests that have proven the act of massaging this natural substance into your scalp on a regular basis can result in hair propagation. These tests, along with the testimonials of people who have tried this method, result in this treatment method being well worth a go. 2 – Soothes Headaches and Migraines

When it comes to discussing what is peppermint oil good for, the relief of headaches and migraines is right up at the top of this list. I must add that in general EOs are widely considered as being efficient, all-natural tools at easing the pain from both mind and body.

This oil we're discussing today is a prime example of this ability and it this makes it one of the top EOs with regards to relaxation and stress relief.

This substance has a natural ability to ease the tension and stress that can build up at our temples – two factors that will most definitely lead to headaches and migraines.

By massaging a small amount of this EO into your temples in a circular motion, using peppermint oil for headaches can be a superb way of removing the stress and strain from your mind.

Just be careful that it doesn’t send you off to sleep soon after!! 🙂

Migraines

Another great way of doing this is by diffusing your favorite EO – this will fill your immediate environment with all the benefits of your chosen oil.

3 – Alleviates IBS

IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome as it’s also known, is a particularly nasty ailment that is quite common in the modern world, though in varying forms. If you do suffer from this problem, then you’ll both agree with me as well as understand the importance of trying to find a remedy.

Just as pain can be relieved from the head, using peppermint oil for IBS is also something that is well worth examining. A large part of the IBS problem is that the muscles and organs in our stomach (the large intestine in particular) become irritated in a number of different ways – including cramping; bloating; gas; diarrhea; abdominal pain; and constipation.

This EO works to relax the muscles of the stomach which can then result in the problems of IBS being greatly reduced. This is why this benefit is a worthy addition to the top 10 peppermint essential oil uses.

4 – Battles Cold Sores

Cold sores are a virus that result in nasty little lesions appearing on our face. While this issue isn’t harmful to overall health, cold sores are certainly eye catching and thus can negatively affect a person’s self-confidence. But what are the best ways to ease this issue?

Well, first of all, it’s always recommend that you visit your local doctor if you’re suffering from such an issue as this one. Cold sores have the unfortunate habit of reoccurring, so you’ll want to get a correct diagnosis as soon as possible.

Another method of treating this ailment, along with whatever your doctor prescribes, is to use an EO that has antibacterial properties – like the one that is the focus of this article. In terms of how to use peppermint oil for cold sores, the best thing to do is to soak some drops onto a cotton ball and press the ball to the affected area. Over time, this will bring relief to the infection and soothe the injured area.

OK, I think it’s fair to say that nobody wants a vermin problem!!

Whether it be mice or rats, having these little guys scurrying around your home or workplace tends to be something that isn’t remotely appealing!

Mice

But how to solve it? Traps? Pest control? How about using peppermint oil to get rid of mice and rats?

EOs and mice aren’t something that usually don't go hand in hand, but there is actually concrete evidence that shows the former can dissuade the latter from entering a certain environment.

The best way to do this is to pour some drops of pure peppermint oil onto some cotton balls and then place these balls around the location where you think the vermin are visiting. This has been proven to actively deter any unwanted furry guests.

So, to answer the question of does peppermint oil repel mice and other vermin, the answer is a somewhat surprising yes! It’s certainly a cheap option that’s well worth experimenting with.

7 – Improve the Health of Your Scalp

The human scalp is something that often has issues in terms of dryness and irritation. This can vary from people having flaky skin that results in dandruff, to others having full blow issues like psoriasis.

Using Peppermint oil on the scalp is a great way of combatting these types of issues. This is because this EO possesses anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties which work to bring relief to dry and irritated skin. By soothing our skin, this oil can actively work towards maintaining and improving the health of our scalps.

Of course, it goes without saying that you should use this treatment method in conjunction with general healthy practises, like, for example, using the correct shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair and scalp.

Using peppermint oil for pregnancy is something that is a topic of debate within the essential oil world. There are some sources that indicate that it is a healthy option, as it can aid with pregnancy related headaches or stomach issues.

However, there are other sources that warns against using this EO when you're going through pregnancy. But which to believe?

Well, it's simple - believe your doctor!! Rather than relying on sources from the web when it comes to pregnancy related issues, there’s no doubt that the best course of action is to visit a healthcare specialist. These people have the years of training and hands on experience in order to supply you with the correct knowledge.

A key benefit of the EO that I’m looking at in this article is that it can work wonders for stabilizing and maintaining the functioning of the human digestive system. This means that this oil, when consumed, can effectively quell the effects of heartburn in no time at all.

Frankincense EO is another great option to alleviate symptoms of heartburn.

When it comes to understanding what does peppermint oil do and the benefits that it can provide, the issue of acne is a prime example. Acne is a truly horrible affliction that can have serious negative impacts on how we perceive ourselves. It doesn’t help that this skin issue usually crops up when we are at our most mentally fragile – our teenage years.

Using a treatment of peppermint oil for acne issues is something that makes a lot of sense when you take into consideration the actual properties that makeup this EO. As explained before, this oil contains a whole host of different capabilities that are ideally suited to dealing with a bacterial infection such as acne vulgaris.

Bonus Use

Uses for Domestic Pets

A reoccurring question that came up when I was researching this topic was the following – is peppermint oil safe for dogs and cats? And, if it is, what benefits can it supply for such pets?

Well, first of all, it’s widely believed that this EO is indeed safe to be used for your pets. In terms of benefits, they are similar to the ones that I’ve already outlined – i.e. relief from pain of the body and mind; a variety of skin issues; and a whole host of health problems.

An extra benefit that's animal related is that peppermint oil can be used for flea prevention as well as for removing ticks from your pets. This is a good trick to keep in mind, especially in the summer months when a variety of nasty critters tend to attach themselves to our furry buddies.

Also, while I’m on the subject of little annoying pests, using peppermint oil for bed bugs has also proven to be effective at keeping your sleeping area clear of any unwanted guests. Simply add a few strategic drops to your bed and this will scare of any bed bugs.

The same actually goes for using this EO to deter ants. I’m not exactly sure how ants would be a problem in your house, but it’s still good to know I guess! 😊
