A Homemade Facial – The Key Points

Short Introduction
Hello, Rachel here on behalf of theHealthBase Team. If you’re a frequent visitor to our site, then you’ll know that a key part of our ethos is to provide articles and reviews on topical information.
How we select these topics is quite simple – we listen to the questions and comments that the Health Base community sends our way. All these suggestions and queries are then compiled and sorted through. From this correspondence is where we select the focus of our next article.
So, with that said, let’s do just that and examine a health and beauty topic that is very relevant in today’s world. I hope that you enjoy what I have to say.
Facial Treatment
Before I get to the DIY version, lets first have a quick look at what this treatment method entails in a broad sense. Whether you’re a man or a woman, everyone can get enjoyment and benefits from a high-quality cleansing session.
Thoroughly exfoliating your face is a pretty amazing feeling. I should now, I do such a cleanse at least twice a week and instantly feel the better for it. Your face feels ten years younger which, of course, is great for lifting your overall mood.
Below is a quick list of the benefits of this treatment type:

OK, so that’s basically what this treatment type is and what it can do for your skin’s health. But what if you don’t want to shelve out cash on a weekly basis in order to avail of this exfoliation method? And, if I’m being honest, a quality session can be pricey.
Well, this leads us nicely to the DIY alternative….
Achieving a Facial at Home
Now, there is a common thought that enters most people’s head when a homemade attempt is discussed – that being that surely the DIY option cannot be as good as a professional experience. For some things, I’d definitely agree with this line of thinking.
For example, any kind of treatment or styling with hair is, in my opinion, best left to the professionals.
Whether it be getting it cut; dyed; or whatever, the professionals will do a better job than attempting it at home…I learnt this the hard way as a youngster!! A Bleaching attempt gone horribly wrong. 🙁

However, when it comes to the exfoliating method that I’m outlining in this article, doing it DIY is definitely feasible, even to the point that it’s possible to achieve a professional standard. And for a fraction of the price, I may add.
Bold promise? Well, allow me to outline a simple yet superbly effective method of DIY cleansing and then you can make up your own mind on whether I’m accurate in my assessment, or perhaps talking a load of nonsense!! I promise not to be offended if you think the latter.
Below is a step by step guide to how I go about achieving the best at home facial experience:
Step One: Prep Work
When it comes to any health and beauty treatment, it’s very important that you do a quick bit of preparation. This is so to ensure that your body is at it’s most receptible for the coming treatment.
When it comes to facials, you obviously want to ensure that this part of your body is unobstructed. This will mean that you’ll want to go ahead and tie back your hair if it’s long in length. This is just basic common sense – simply grab a scrunchies or hairband. Job done.
You’ll also want to give you hands a good clean before beginning. Again, this may seem like some pretty obvious advice, but I’d imagine that people cleaning themselves with dirty hands is quite a common thing. This is because a lot of people don’t realize the amount of dirt and other stuff that accumulates on our hands.
It’s not rocket science to understand that cleansing one’s face with dirty hands is extremely counter-productive. It kind of, no it completely, defeats the purpose of the whole venture. So, make sure that you give your mitts a good wash with soap and warm water before you begin.
Step Two: Cleanse & Exfoliate
This is the next logical step and an important one in the whole process. Our faces accumulative quite a lot of unpleasant substances and residues on a daily basis. This is yucky I know, but it’s also unavoidable.
The good news is that we can remove all this nastiness. Possessing a good cleansing routine will achieve this for the most part, and thus this is why this step is so vital. In order to achieve the maximum benefits of this cleansing method, you need to have a clean canvas with which to work with.

By far the best way of exfoliating your face is to use a top-quality cleansing agent. These products have been specifically designed to dig out the variety of elements that can block up our pores. Again, to understand exactly how to use such a product, click on the image above.
Or, if you’re looking for an example of such a proven pore cleanser, then read our quick review one such example - look for the Zenmed Moisturizer in the table of contents.
Step Three: Have a Good Steam
Steaming is an excellent method of boosting the health and physical appearance of your complexion. The benefits and positive impacts that this method can provide are numerous and well worth keeping in mind.
For a full breakdown of the top benefits provided by this method, click on the image below where we outline the top ten:
When it comes to the actual steaming process, there are a few different tried and tested methods that you can attempt from the comfort of your own home. This can range from using a bowel of hot water and a towel, all the way up to using a top-class face steaming machine.
The choice is really up to you. However, if you are serious about your exfoliating and want to have top class home treatment on a regular basis, then I’d highly recommend you look into purchasing one of these home machines.
The benefits that these machines provide are top class. I should know, I’ve been using one for years now. For more information on home face steamers, check out our comprehensive guide on the topic – https://thehealthbase.com/best-face-steamers/.
Step Four: Apply a Mask
A great additional step in this treatment method is to apply an exfoliation mask. This method is a great way of sucking out any impurities that may still be lying within your pores.
The important thing to note when it comes to these masks is that you need to use one that is accommodating to your skin. There are a few different skin types, and each one will require a different variety of mask. Below is a rough guide of what I mean by this:
Oily | Dry |
---|---|
Use a mud or clay mask as this type will absorb any excess oil/sebum | Use a creamy mask type in order to provide extra hydration |
A mask that I’m quite fond is one that contains a mixture of strawberry, banana, and papaya. Such masks that contain fruit are very popular nowadays, which is not surprising when you factor in all the natural goodness that lies within fruit. I’ve outlined below a quick method of creating this mask.
My Favorite Exfoliating Mask
1
Mix together one tablespoon of mashed papaya; one of mashed strawberries; and one of mashed banana.
Feel free to experiment with different fruit types!
3
When your mixture is ready, apply a layer of it to all over your face. You’ll only need a thin layer so there’s no need to pile it on! You can also refrigerate the rest of it for use in another session.
Or do what I do – take the remaining paste and use it as the basis for a fruit smoothie! Waste not, want not. 🙂
2
Add some honey as a sticking agent. Honey is also exceptionally good for your skin.
Try make sure that the honey is organic as cheap honey will have loads of preservatives and the likes in it.
4
I leave this paste on my face for roughly 12 – 15 minutes. This is ample time in my opinion in order to get the full benefits of an exfoliation mask.
Leaving the mask on for any longer than this can cause your skin to dry out and become irritated
5
Remove the paste from your face via the use of lukewarm water. Make sure that you get it all, the last thing you want is to be walking around with a bit of fruit paste decorating your chin!!
That’s all there is to it. It’s quite straightforward and very beneficial. Of course, as with all things, you can also buy such masks. Take a look at this one.
Step Five: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
The reason why I used this word three times in the paragraph heading is for two reasons – firstly, because many people either don’t bother to or forget to moisturize regularly, and secondly, it’s so damn important that it’s well worth repeating!!
Moisturizing on a daily basis is key in order to keep your skin refreshed and topped up with the needed nutrients and hydration. This is just an inescapable fact. However, the importance of moisturizing is doubled when it comes to exfoliating and cleansing.
Your efforts in cleaning your face can leave your face quite dry and lacking in nutrients – this is a natural side effect of the cleansing process. Therefore, it’s vital that you use a moisturizer to re-hydrate your skin and supply it once more with the necessary vitamins and other such good stuff.
FAQs
I thought I’d finish off this article with some rapid-fire FAQs. Some of these questions I’ve already answered, but I think it’s always helpful to supply a quick breakdown of information even if it’s repeated.
